Prop 65
Statement on California Proposition 65 Warning
Dear Customer,
We understand that the Prop 65 warning about the nutritional supplements we sell is somewhat shocking and disconcerting.
It is important to understand the background to this warning. Prop 65 is a law that was never intended for the supplement industry. The truth is that lead is ubiquitous in our environment and is commonly found in most foods and nearly all dietary supplements.
A few years ago, the FDA surveyed over 300 vitamin products from various companies for lead content. The FDA’s published summary shows that lead detected was in nearly every one of the approx. 300 products that they tested. The key points to understand are that the amounts of lead found are almost nothing compared to our normal total daily lead intake from food and from our environment, and that virtually all natural products will contain some level of lead.
In addition, there are certain nutrients that decrease the amount of lead absorbed in your intestinal tract and help you excrete more of it. These are calcium, iron, vitamin C, and vitamin B1. This means that taking these vitamins in addition to eating a varied, nutrient-rich diet will ensure that you do not build up lead toxicity over time from all exposure sources.
You can be assured that you are receiving the highest quality and purest supplements from Designs For Health. We personally take their supplements everyday and would not do so unless confident in their purity. Designs For Health has been FDA compliant for years and is NSF and GMP certified. This is pretty much the furthest you can go in assuring purity and integrity.
Designs for Health maintains the following documentation requirements for raw materials:
Certificates of Analysis (C of As): Every lot must be accompanied by comprehensive vendor-supplied documentation of the material’s identity, potency, and purity.
Independent Laboratory Analysis: Providing an extra measure of quality assurance, all raw materials used in the manufacture of Designs for Health products are monitored for potential contaminants and tested for the marker compound quantities as defined on our label. Numerous analytical testing processes are employed, as applicable, including HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Chromatography) and FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), to name a few.
Finished Product Testing The quality control process does not end with C of As and raw material testing. As an additional line of assurance, each and every Designs for Health product is analyzed for finished product content to confirm that the manufacturing process has resulted in a finished product that meets label claims.
The take-away message is this:
You don’t have to worry about the small amounts of lead in quality professional vitamins such as those from Designs for Health. The amounts are almost nothing compared to our normal total daily lead intake from food and from our environment.
In Health,
Dana and Brent
